October 10th ’15 – Reflections Bistro – Dawlish

6.5 /10 Food – 6/10 Service

After hearing nothing but good things about this bistro (and recommending it to others based on the reviews of others) I decided to take my wife there for her birthday meal.  A very well decorated, contemporary interior with freindly staff.  I ordered a bottle of Port but soon found out they had none in stock but to give credit where it is due, they went out and bought a bottle, so, service started well. I ordered the Lasagne, my wife the Mac & Cheese.  Food came out quite fast but this is where it went downhill.  The Mac & Cheese was bland and the only flavour detectable in the lasange was the overload of cheese they put on the top.  There was also no identifiable layers to the dish.  We were also told when we ordered that they had run out of steak, but after being told this I saw other customers served it and I heard other order, so not too impressed.

It took around 20 minutes from us finishing to our plates being cleared, then another 15 mins before the bill was presented (which I had to ask for).  There was a further 15 minute wait for me to be able to pay (again – i had to ask).  I could understand it if the place was packed but there were only another 5/6 tables there.

In all, maybe I picked the wrong night so based on it’s usually good reputation, I will return once more and give them another chance – but I won’t be having the Lasagne.

March 13th ’15 – The Pizza Cafe – Newton Abbot

8/10 Food – 9/10 Service

2nd visit for me to this cafe.  Very freindly and accomodating staff (Was prepared to move tables around on quite a busy Friday night).  Food was fast out of the kitchen and was of a good standard and very well priced.  Will go back again.  Like the fact the pizzas are named after films too – nice touch.

October 10th ’14 – The Mount Pleasant – Dawlish Warren

8/10 Food – 6/10 Service

Eaten here many times over the past few years.  Nice view of the warren and a nice ‘olde’ feel to the decor with exposed beams in the ceiling.  Had the Supreme Of Chicken.  Overall very good and would certainly go back for the same dish.  Service not fantastic tonight as no waitress service like every other time I’ve eaten there.  All food had to be ordered at the bar.

July 22nd ’14 – The Smugglers Inn – Holcombe

6/10 Food – 8/10 Service

This pub/restaraunt commands stunning views of the bay between Dawlish & Teignmouth.  Ordered the Lasagne.  Was OK but did not  blow me away.  Was heavy on surface grease and lacks overall flavour.   Not the worst I’ve had, but far from the best.  My recipe is far superior.  That said, the service was very good so will give another go but would select another dish.
